Ernst & Young analyses the impact of the Budget on Bharti Airtel and R-Com.
Here are few excerpts of the analysis publised on Business Standard recently -
Bharti Airtel
- It would be possible to maximize the Cenvat Credit by either reversing the credit attributable to exempt services or making payment of 8 percent of the exempt services- Excise duty has been fully exempted on wireless data modem cards- Cascading effect of DDT payouts in two layer structures largely mitigated- FBT cost could go down- Deduction for preliminary expenses incurred on extension/ setting up of units made available to service companies- Add back of deferred tax, DDT, etc for MAT purposes could increase tax liability
R-COM
- It would be possible to maximize the Cenvat Credit by either reversing the credit attributable to exempt services or making payment of 8 percent of the exempt services- Excise duty has been fully exempted on wireless data modem cards- National Calamity Contingent duty (NCCD) at the rate of 1 percent has been imposed on mobile phones. Credit of any duty of excise other than NCCD will not be utilized for payment of 1percent NCCD on mobile phones- Cascading effect of DDT payouts in two layer structures largely mitigated- FBT cost could go down- Deduction for preliminary expenses incurred on extension/ setting up of units made available to service companies- Add back of deferred tax, DDT, etc for MAT purposes could increase tax liability

Tata Comm Plans $2 Bn Expansion
Tata Communications is planning to invest $2 billion (Rs 8,000 crore) in the next three years for expansion of its infrastructure and services.
Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, Srinivasa Addepalli, senior vice-president, corporate strategy, Tata Communications, said, “Half of the investment will go into submarine cables and network enhancement and the rest 50 percent will be invested to roll out WiMax to cover 15 cities by 2009. Currently, WiMax services are available only in Bangalore.”
The company is also expanding its global virtual private network (VPN) to China through a network-to-network interface (NNI) agreement with China Enterprise Netcom Corporation (China Entercom or CEC), a value-added telecommunication services and integrated IT solutions provider and subsidiary of China International Trust and Investment Corporation.
Through this NNI, Tata Communications and China Entercom have interconnected their respective multi-protocol label switching infrastructures, allowing Tata Communications’ multinational corporation customers VPN connectivity reach beyond the existing 120 cities across the country and 19 major business centres across North America, Asia and Europe, which will now also include 347 cities across China.

Calling Cards Option for India Calling
Hi all, I have been using all kinds of calling cards to India. Reliance is not offering anything great as of now. I agree Airtel’s Hotline is simply a good deal. Save money and be easy while you call.
I am a studying in USA and have family and friends in India. I spend a handsome amount on calling cards... This Hotline is better than all the offers currently floated around. I agree on the calculations and saving dollars. Believe me guys switch to Airtel and see the difference yourself.
The call quality with Airtel Call Home is been far too better than reliance. And now with airtel hotline its simple single digit dial, which is just a cherry on the cake!
